Peer Leader Job Description

JOB TITLE: PEER LEADER

The Office of Academic Affairs and Student Life is now accepting applications for Peer Leader positions. 

A peer leader is a full-time, non-first-year student, who will provide leadership over the summer, during orientation, and during the fall semester both in and outside of the Common Experience classroom. Each Peer Leader will serve as a role model and will be an integral part of helping new students make the transition to college life. The Common Experience class is scheduled for the first nine weeks of each semester for first-time college students. Also, Successful Strategies for Transfer Students is a four-week course designed to address transfer students' needs.

Interested students must submit a completed application along with two recommendations one must be from a Fisher College faculty member and the other can be from a Fisher College faculty or staff. After applying, qualified students will be interviewed. Late applicants will not be considered for a position.

Duties & Responsibilities

·      Attend and participate in all scheduled meetings, presentations, meals, and social activities during Orientation

·      Assist with the various aspects of Orientation and participate in program preparations and/or presentations as    necessary

·      Serve as a positive role model for all students and speak positively about the college

·      Interact with and get to know all new students

·      Be available to answer students’ questions regarding academic and social concerns

·      Attending Summer Registration Days is optional and you will receive additional compensation for doing so

·      Must plan to attend all class meeting times for The Common Experience class

·      Make one presentation (ten to fifteen minutes in length) to the class in Common Experience

·      Help facilitate discussion in the classroom as requested by the instructor

·      Send weekly reminder emails and/or Canvas announcements to the class

·      Hold office hours to meet with students who may be struggling in the class

·      Provide outreach to students missing class or assignments as requested by the instructor

·      Provide input into class activities and assignments as requested by the instructor

·      Be accessible to students during the first few weeks of the semester to answer questions

·      Attend the scheduled mandatory Common Experience check-in meetings throughout the Fall Semester (dates provided in Peer Leader Agreement)

·      Perform other duties as assigned by the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership or Academic Affairs

 

Please Note

  • Due to the position's nature, all training dates are mandatory. Failure to attend all training sessions will result in the forfeiture of the  Peer Leader position. The dates and information regarding how training will occur, virtual or in person, will be determined as soon as possible. Your cooperation and patience are appreciated.
  • The position of Peer Leader is contingent upon student enrollment in both IS 105 The Common Experience and IS 105T Successful Strategies for Transfer Students. The number of students who register for each class will determine how many Peer Leaders are needed to be paired with a professor and course section.
  • Students can only select to participate in one leadership role: Peer Leader or Resident Assistant due to each position.
