How Students Can Achieve Career Goals

Meet Dr. Agnes Oyewale, Director of Career Services and Employer Relations at Fisher College.

Beginning with an internship at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital through the 'Project Success' program at Harvard Medical School during high school, she subsequently interned at the Massachusetts State House and later at Pearson Education, where she transitioned from an intern to a full-time employee. After her experiences, she worked at the Boston Private Industry Council (PIC) as a Career Specialist and was later promoted to assistant director. Reflecting on her career path, Dr. Oyewale shares with us that "[Throughout] my career journey, I have had amazing internship and job experiences; therefore, it brings me great joy to help students prepare for and access career opportunities."

Dr. Agnes Oyewale finds it highly rewarding to assist students in finding their career paths. According to her, observing students growing as professionals and actively participating in career exploration and readiness activities is the most fulfilling aspect of her job. What makes it even better is watching them thrive at their jobs or internships. This passion for directly impacting students and witnessing their progression toward their career goals drives her dedication to her field.

We asked Dr. Oyewale to share her insight on what skills she thinks students should develop to thrive in today’s job market. She emphasizes the significance of having both technical and soft skills in today's highly competitive job market. She believes possessing these skills can distinguish an individual from other candidates, and soft skills are essential for a thriving workplace. It includes qualities such as being an effective communicator, problem solver, and team player. Her commitment to helping students acquire these essential qualities highlights the Career Services Center's mission to empower students with the tools they need to succeed in their careers.

Dr. Oyewale offers valuable advice for those beginning their career journey. She emphasizes the importance of resilience and perseverance, as there may be both highs and lows along the way.  "It is so important to be resilient and persevere [throughout] your career journey.” Furthermore, she suggests engaging with one's network, as someone you know may be able to assist you in your career path currently or in the future.
