Meet Ali Tkach, a senior here at Fisher College majoring in Biology on a pre-veterinary track. In March of her senior year, Ali toured Fisher College, and the close-knit community, along with its prime location in the heart of Boston, made her decision on where to spend the next four years much easier. However, the career opportunities it offered convinced her to choose Fisher College.
Having grown up on the North Shore, Ali found the move to a larger city fairly easy. She noted, "Everything is way more accessible and closer than living in a suburban or rural area. Adjusting to living on my own was a challenge, but having a strong support system and staying busy made it easier.”
Going into college Ali knew that she wanted to be a veterinarian, she says “Biology is a common major for those who want to go to veterinary school after undergrad. Fisher's pre-veterinary pathway put me on track to where I needed to be to apply to veterinary school.” Now, four years later, she is in the middle of her senior Fall Semester, getting ready for the next steps in her journey.
During her first two years at Fisher College, Ali lived on campus and liked that she was a quick three-minute walk from her class especially as winter was approaching. “I really like that they have more character than other schools and don't look like a hospital room. The views are great, too.”
Ali has been actively involved in clubs, attending campus events, and spending time in the common areas to meet new people. However, having played volleyball in high school, she knew from the start that joining the college volleyball team was a priority for her. Since joining the team, she has been named captain of the volleyball team and she has created close bonds with her teammates. Ali said, “It made being a freshman in college a little less scary. Because of my volleyball team, there were familiar faces in the halls and in my classes on the first day of school.”
However, on top of academics and being a volleyball captain, she also works at a veterinary clinic in Boston, tutors on campus, is an honors student, and is a peer leader for first-year students on campus. When Ali asked how she managed everything, she said, "I always make sure to leave time for myself to pursue my hobbies and interests." Also, I love making lists of tasks that I need to get done. This helps me stay on track, and it feels so satisfying to cross things off.”
Recently, Ali just submitted her application to Veterinary school for the fall of 2025 and is anxiously awaiting to hear back in the coming months. However, she gives a piece of advice to incoming and first-year students, “Get involved. Fisher is what you make of it, and you'll make the most memories if you are an active member of the community!”
