Stephanie Quinones, a second-year student hailing from West Haven, Connecticut, offers a glimpse into her journey toward pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice at Fisher College.
Stephanie portrayed her love for the arts in high school through her participation in the theater program where she performed in musicals such as Legally Blonde and Good Luck Charlie Brown while also leading the clarinet section of the school band. She was also involved in her school's news show and blog, where she strengthened her communication and writing skills, building her foundation for her collegiate career.
Stephanie was initially attracted to journalism and later realized the powerful influence that writing holds. She said, "I learned the impact journalism can bring, how it shapes people's views and opinions about the world. I realized how important representation matters and how I can use this knowledge to benefit others in criminal justice." A pivotal moment for her was during a summer journalism program at Yale University, where Stephanie conducted interviews for articles on criminal cases, sparking her passion for criminal justice. She recognized the significance of human connection and communication skills in this field.
Stephanie was driven to be the first in her family to attend college, so she continued her education after high school. When choosing Fisher College, she was drawn to the vibrant city atmosphere, it was a big difference from the small city she grew up in. “From my first visit I was deeply drawn to the city,” she explains. “Growing up in a smaller town, it was hard to make new friends, but studying in Boston has allowed me to meet people from all over the world.”
Stephanie looks back on her first year of college fondly, remembering the smooth transition into college. "The faculty and RAs were very supportive during orientation and offered a translator for my parents to make the transition easy," stated Stephanie. "I appreciate all of the help we were given." Stephanie highlights the impact the accommodations had in creating an inclusive environment for her family, allowing her to feel accepted in her new community. Grateful for this support, Stephanie recognizes the essential role the Fisher campus community played in her adjustment to college.
As she works toward her degree, Stephanie stays involved in Fisher's community. She continues to pursue her passion for theater by participating in the Drama Club and performing in shows including Fisher College's Little Women, One Act Showcase, and the upcoming 20th Anniversary show. Stephanie is actively involved in the Fisher College community, enjoying the variety of campus activities.
