Meet Layla Wilson: A Second-Year Biology Student Pursuing Her Passion for Community Involvement and Veterinary Medicine

  • Fisher Friday

Meet Layla Wilson, a second-year biology student with a minor in management, originally from Stratford, Connecticut, who has embraced Boston as her second home. Seeking diverse experiences beyond her hometown, Layla was drawn to Fisher College for its tight-knit community within the vibrant city.

Balancing a multitude of roles at Fisher, Layla immerses herself in various activities. From tutoring English literature, writing, and chemistry to her part-time job at the Falcon Shop. She also serves as the Sophomore Senator in the student government. Layla believes her contributions to the Fisher community are central to her identity. She remarks, "Establishing an efficient dynamic between my professional and personal life here at Fisher has benefited me in unforeseen ways and I know it will positively affect the trajectory of my future. "

In addition to her commitments on campus, Layla serves as an administrative intern at Tufts Medical Center (TMC), collaborating with the abdominal transplant team in the Department of Surgery. Her internship entails attending meetings with the Boston Medical Center and the bone marrow transplant team, alongside tasks such as formatting the extracurricular activities calendar and creating a master contact sheet for organ procurement organizations (OPOs) globally. Reflecting on her experience, Layla says, “To see so many inspiring individuals collaborating in both a clinical and non-clinical aspect for the greater good of one person’s life is truly a unique and astonishing experience.”

Layla's internship experience at Tufts Medical Center has provided her with invaluable insights into the healthcare field, although her ultimate career goal is in veterinary medicine. “Despite the conventional medical focus at TMC, the fundamental aspects of healthcare administration are universal among 2-legged and 4-legged patients alike. I am grateful for this opportunity to further tailor my professional portfolio and perspective in an alternative field to strengthen myself as a professional overall,” she explains. To read more about Layla’s internship experience, read our blog post about internships

Layla's dedication to the Boston community extends beyond her involvement at Fisher College. She has established connections outside of the college, particularly within her church community. Layla volunteers her time to them by participating in community service activities in and around Boston. Attending church every Sunday, which is only a short walk from Fisher's campus, has given her a supportive and friendly environment similar to the sense of belonging that she values on campus.

Layla is an embodiment of the core values of dedication and involvement at Fisher College. Her diverse involvement both on and off campus is a testament to her commitment to personal growth and community enrichment. Her unique experiences continue to shape her as she pursues a career in veterinary medicine. Layla's story serves as inspiration, highlighting the transformative power of involvement and the endless opportunities for personal and professional development available at Fisher College.
