First-year student, Amy Pol, a native of Boston and a Health Sciences major, shares her journey from high school to Fisher College.
The people in our lives frequently inspire and encourage us the most; for Amy, in particular, her grandparents were two of those people. She continues, stating that "they were able to do so much with so little" is what inspires and motivates her. They are the perfect example of someone who has put in the effort to become someone their kids can be proud of.
You're going to need to make decisions before you enter and end your senior year of high school. When Amy's senior year of high school drew near, she realized she needed a college that would accommodate her major and offer commuter living. Price, community, and programs were her top priorities, Amy says, "I wanted a school that was affordable along with having a healthy lifestyle. I also needed a college with a good science program to hone my skills for the future.”
After discovering Fisher College and speaking with an admissions agent she immediately began the application process. She shared that it was quite simple. "The process was straightforward because of my admissions counselor, Henry Maldonado," she stated, “He never left me in the dark and guided me through every stage. Everything went smoothly and simply.”
Once she declared Fisher as her college and began her semester in the fall of 2023, she quickly felt connected to the Fisher community, even while being a commuter. “Fisher is great for commuters because they have many different lounges and areas for people like me to hang out during off periods such as the Student Center, Falcons' Nest, etc.”
She began her Spring Semester as a student ambassador in the admissions office, where she assisted with administrative duties and gave tours to prospective students. Since starting her job, she mentions being able to manage her workload more efficiently while also pursuing her education. “Balancing school and work can be difficult but if I get my homework done on time it’s not too tasking. The people at my job make it much more bearable.”
As Amy navigates her academic journey, her primary goals revolve around making the most out of her college experience and making a positive change through her chosen career path.
After taking more lab-based classes, she discovered her passion for science and the lab setting. "In the future, I would like to become a biomedical engineer because I want to make a difference in the lives of people suffering from illnesses," she says, discussing her professional aspirations and how she hopes to assist the organization Make a Change.
Amy gives advice to seniors or people looking to go to college but, are struggling to find their career of choice, “My biggest advice is to not stress if they don’t know exactly what they want to do with their lives straight out of high school. It’s a process. They have plenty of time to figure it out.”
