Alexander Andersson’s Journey as a Collegiate Esports Player at Fisher College

  • Fisher Friday

Moving from his hometown of Kävlinge, Sweden to study abroad at Fisher, Alexander enjoys the busy lifestyle of Boston while playing for the Fisher Esports Counter-Strike team. Coming from one of the top teams in the world to Fisher, Alexander hopes to share his game knowledge and experience with his teammates to help bring the Counter-Strike team to victory.

Meet Swedish Esports Pro, Alexander Andersson

After a 10-hour flight from Sweden, Alexander Andersson landed in Boston, ready to embark on his college journey at Fisher College for the 2024 spring semester. Choosing Fisher College was a no-brainer for this collegiate esports player due to its renowned and competitive esports program, coupled with its prime location in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay. This bustling city atmosphere marked a significant change for Alexander, who hails from the small Swedish city of Kävlinge, with a population of fewer than 10,000 people. Reflecting on the transition, he shared, “Kävlinge is so small that you would recognize four or five people at the grocery store every time you went shopping, so that should say a lot. I feel like Boston is a much more active city where stuff is happening all the time.”

Despite adjusting to this new environment -- and joining Fisher in a later arrival, Alexander discovered a sense of community in the Fisher Esports department as a member of the Counter-Strike 2 team.

His journey into collegiate esports began in childhood, playing computer games online. As a teenager, he found Counter-Strike, even playing on a team ranked #55 globally. Reflecting on his esports program experience, he said, “I’ve played a lot of Counter-Strike at home, and being part of the #55 best team globally, I already had a lot of experience. Now, I feel I can help my teammates grow by sharing my knowledge and turning it into wins for our team.”

Beyond the esports arena, Alexander resides on campus in one of Fisher’s five residential halls. Despite his relatively short time as a Falcon, he has grown fond of Boston and appreciates the diversity within Fisher’s student body.

“Living on campus has been amazing! There are always people around, and you get to interact with diverse individuals -- from your classes, roommates, and dorm neighbors to esports players from other games,” he noted.

Representing students from over 35 countries, including Alexander’s home country of Sweden, Fisher College strives to create a welcoming environment for everyone. For those contemplating studying abroad, Alexander shares advice from his own international student experiences, saying, “Don’t be afraid of how it will go – just go for it. I'm only 11 days into my college experience, but I'm already super happy that I chose this over studying at home in Sweden.”
