Commuter Student Maybelline Machuca Thrives at Fisher College

Originally from Long Island, Maybelline is now in her third year at Fisher College pursuing her degree in Business Management, with a double concentration in Accounting and Finance.

When choosing where to go to college, Maybelline knew she wanted to continue her education in Boston. Her interest in Boston stemmed from her childhood visits to the city, “I’ve loved Boston since I was a kid,” she explains. “The city is easy to get around and full of other college students.”

Easy access to transportation is a key feature to Maybelline since she commutes. During the school year, Maybelline stays with family in Roslindale, giving her a twenty-minute commute to Fisher’s campus. Despite not residing on campus, Maybelline remains actively engaged in the Fisher community. "Being a commuter has never made me feel like I'm missing out on the college experience at Fisher," she explains. Maybelline takes full advantage of school activities, such as attending Celtics and Red Sox games, to fully immerse herself in Boston’s culture.  

Commuting has also honed Maybelline's time management skills. Juggling work, school, and personal commitments, she has learned the value of effective time management in her life. "Time management is crucial," she explains. "I prioritize my classes and plan my work schedule around school to make sure I have enough time to complete assignments."

Maybelline is a talented finance student at Fisher College, she had the honor of representing Fisher at the highly anticipated Boston Regional Fed Challenge Competition in 2023. In this competition, Maybelline was pitted against 20 other top-tier colleges in the area. Drawing on her knowledge of economic conditions and monetary policies, Maybelline analyzed the market trends and formulated well-considered recommendations to tackle the challenges at hand.

As a devoted member of the Fisher Falcon community, Maybelline has gained a wealth of experience that will undoubtedly serve her well in her future career endeavors. Her participation in the Fed Challenge Competition has further honed her analytical skills, critical thinking abilities, and management - these traits that are highly valued in the field of economics. Overall, Maybelline's impressive performance at the competition is a true testament to her dedication, hard work, and academic excellence.

Maybelline's experience at Fisher exemplifies how commuters can fully immerse themselves in college life. Despite not residing on campus, she has the opportunity to embrace Boston's vibrant culture and actively engage in school activities. By making the most of everything the city and Fisher College have to offer, Maybelline is actively preparing for her future career goals as a budget analyst.
