Avani Ramoutar Learns to Balance Esports with His Education at Fisher College

Meet Avani Ramoutar, a senior at Fisher College majoring in Management. He was born in Trinidad and Tobago and lived there until the age of 9 when he moved to Ontario, Canada. He now lives in Boston and is an active campus member, especially in the Fisher Esports Program. This year, Avani chose to manage and coach the teams instead after playing for the varsity Overwatch team in previous years.

Before attending Fisher, Avani focused on his professional Overwatch career. When explaining why he chose Fisher, he said, "I played Overwatch professionally for about a year and a half. At the time, I dropped out of college for various reasons, such as being unsure of what I wanted to do and the pandemic affecting my education. During that period, Aaron and Brian contacted me to pursue esports and continue my education. Collegiate esports was a new concept back then, but I believed it would be a good option for me."

His path to becoming a collegiate pro started back in 2016. When asked about how he got into esports, he says, “When Overwatch [was] released back in 2016, I only played it casually and my main game at the time was CSGO [Counter-Strike]. But as I continued to play it, I started improving at a rapid rate. I thought competing would be fun, so I tried it out.”

Avani came to Fisher for the Esports Program with the hope of becoming the best Overwatch player he could be. Initially, he struggled to manage his time effectively at Fisher, as he devoted most of his time to esports. However, he gradually improved his time management skills by shifting his focus away from esports and toward his education and other responsibilities. He explained, "I realized I was overwhelmed with my responsibilities, so I started writing down what I needed to get done and made mental notes. It helped me manage my time, and my routine became more efficient. Things just became easier over time as I got used to things and living on campus."

"When asked about his future career, he said, 'I'd like to work in the esports space, whether it is managing or organizing events and tournaments.' Although he came to Fisher as a professional player, having spent countless hours competing in Overwatch, he now wants to develop his life beyond just Overwatch. He plans to spend more time at the gym and have new experiences in Boston, saying, 'For me, I just want to have a life that’s not just sitting in front of a screen all day.'"

Originally from Ontario, Canada, Avani has adjusted to life in the city of Boston while attending Fisher College. Initially, he prioritized his career as a competitor in Overwatch. Over time, he has learned to take a more balanced approach to his life by focusing on other responsibilities. He has broadened his horizons beyond competitive gaming and is now working towards a managerial role within esports.
