SC113 Principles of Chemistry (Lab Science)
Prerequisite: MA 106 with a C or better.
This course will provide a survey of the basic principles of inorganic and organic chemistry and their application to health-related issues. Topics to be included in inorganic chemistry are scientific measurements, energy and matter, atoms and elements, compounds and their bonds, chemical reactions, solutions, acids and bases, gases, and nuclear radiation. Organic chemistry topics will include: alkenes, alcohols, phenols, ethers, aldehydes and ketones, organic acids and esters, amenes and amides. The study of the biochemical molecules -- lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids -- will also be included. Laboratory work is a required component of this course.
