EN 305 Multicultural American Literature
Prerequisite: EN 102. In addition, completion of at least one 100- or 200-level literature course is recommended.
In this course, students will explore and analyze twentieth century American literature written from the perspective of authors from different ethnicities, including those of African, Asian, Muslim, Native American, and Latino backgrounds. By reading non-fiction and fiction of those from diverse backgrounds and learning about important historical events, students will understand how ethnicity and history affect themes in literature. Historical events that may be discussed include the birth of the American dream, the effects of the Great Depression, the influence of the Civil Rights Movement, the development of reservations and internment camps, and 9/11. A library component is included.
