CJ 331 Hate Crimes
Prerequisite: SO 105 Criminology or Permission of the Program Director
This course will explore crimes whose commission is the result of bigotry towards people based on such categories as their perceived race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, gender or physical disabilities. This course will define hate crimes and explore how they differ from hate speech. The course will examine theories of hate crime, typologies of hate groups, hate crime victimology, criminal justice system responses, and the political and social factors that affect the ways in which the criminal justice system defines and responds to hate crime.
