Current Projects
Century Council Partnership
The Century Council has engaged Fisher to conduct a $35K Research Study to Evaluate the Role and Effectiveness of Campus Law Enforcement and Student Affairs in Combating Underage Drinking on College Campuses. The Century Council promotes responsible decision-making and is a leader in the fight against drunk driving and underage drinking. The study will involve conducting two focus groups in May (using the newly renovated room at 5th floor, 118) an electronic survey, and follow-up telephone interviews.
Leadership Speaker Series
Recently, the Center began a Speaker Series. Guest speakers have included Adam Schwartzbaugh and Sonia Chang-Diaz. Adam Swartzbaugh, CEO and founder of the Genesis Network, spoke in December 2009 about his experiences in starting his own company, a human rights project that helps at-risk children and communities. State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz hosted a forum for students in February 2010, speaking to a standing-room-only audience about the challenges and opportunities she faced in her path to the State Senate.
Child Passenger Safety
In August of 2008, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Highway Safety Division awarded the Fisher College Center for Leadership in Public Service a three year engagement focused on training individuals on the proper installation of child safety seats. Using data driven strategies, the Center is developing a network of advocates and coordinating training, outreach and program development. Key initiatives include development of a diversity program, building community awareness, and developing partnerships with social service providers, community organizations and businesses to support this injury prevention effort. Additionally, the Center planned and coordinated a conference for 200 child passenger safety technicians. The conference will be a yearly event in addition to monthly training programs.
The Center for Leadership in Public Service at Fisher College will train students on the topic and engage them in community service through the provision of education and logistical support at community-based child safety seat check up events.

Racial Profiling/Benchmarking
In December of 2008, the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, Highway Safety Division (HSD) selected and funded the Center to implement a vehicle crash benchmarking study. Research conducted by the Center built on a 2004 study to determine if the demographic profile of those involved in crashes was reflective of overall population demographics as per the United States Census. The process included on site - direct observational surveys to review crash locations and the demographics of the driver.
The Center trained students in research design and direct observational surveys, and worked with the Massachusetts State Police to select locations in each of the troop areas for analysis. Team members collected data, compared current data against historic state police data and the United States Census and then issued a report of findings and recommendations.
Highway Safety Grammer/Middle School Pilot Program
The Center was awarded a grant by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, Highway Safety Division (HSD) to educate middle school students on occupant protection, pedestrian safety, and bicycle safety. The program will be replicable statewide. The team will provide educational material, train middle school teachers, work with school resource officers (SROs) to promote traffic safety messages, work with local police departments on Click It or Ticket initiatives, and conduct an evaluation. The project will be completed by September 30, 2009.
