Internships

An Internship is an experiential learning opportunity in which the academic knowledge gained in your college courses is applied to a supervised work situation. This combination of work and academics enhances your overall knowledge base, allows you to sharpen your current skill set, and enables you to develop real workplace competencies. Internships occur outside of the classroom and should be in your major degree area. An Internship can be one of the most satisfying and enlightening experiences at the College. However, preparation is the key to getting the most out of your internship. The following steps can make your internship more fulfilling: do some research into the types of positions or jobs you might enjoy, prepare yourself mentally for the demands an internship can pose, make certain you have the time to devote to this course, and maintain a positive attitude during this experience.

At Fisher College, internships are developed cooperatively between:

  1. The College Internship Coordinator (Day Division) or Campus Director (DCE - Division of Continuing Education)
  2. The student
  3. An assigned "Internship Instructor"
  4. The workplace supervisor

Though each Academic Department has specific goals and procedures that you must follow, the basic guidelines for an internship course at Fisher College are:

  1. Each internship experience holds academic credit.
  2. Internships are generally non-paid. However, with the approval of the employer and an Advisor or Campus Director there are times when compensation may result.
  3. Internships must be completed within a normal semester or term; however, there may be exceptions with permission from your Advisor.
  4. The necessary experience/contact hours are determined by the Internship Guidelines for the course and are influenced by the credits awarded (see course descriptions)
  5. Internships are usually part time, anywhere between 10 and 25 hours per week.
  6. Internships must be arranged approximately a month prior to their start date.
  7. The student must have met the academic prerequisite courses before pursing an internship.
