The following excerpts are from the
speech Amanda Bertone '08 delivered at the inauguration of Dr.
Thomas M. McGovern as the eighth president of Fisher College.
Amanda is an officer of the Student Government Association, maintains
a perfect GPA, and recently performed as the Sugar Plum Fairy
in the Boston Urban Nutcracker.
"For students here, Fisher College has come to stand for
more than an academic institution; it is instead a community,
a home in which the advancement of youth is cherished, cultivated,
and encouraged to thrive...
"At Fisher College, we the students are blessed to be in
the presence and under the instruction of some of the most wonderful
educators this city has to offer. Although their educational qualifications
are valued, it is the result of devotion, starting from the top,
that no question is left unanswered and no student is left overlooked...
"At Fisher College, all of you, both faculty and staff,
are not only developing minds, but you are also creating people;
whole people complete with character, a sense of morality, and
an awareness of humility and generosity. Intelligence cannot stand
without the foundation of a strong integrity and moral fiber...
"This community is ideal for cultivating ideas as well as
individuals, molding us into people of significance, trained with
the abilities to succeed at all we do and to do so with a inkling
of charisma. With all that you teach, you leave behind an imprint
of how we ought to think and how we ought to live; a lesson that
we will carry on throughout our careers and our endeavors."
