As the world's attention has returned to Boston for the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon tragedy, Fisher College continues to honor the resilience and heroism of survivors, first responders, and families of the fallen.
On May 10, 2014, Boston Marathon heroes Carlos Arredondo and Jeff Bauman will serve as distinguished commencement speakers at its 110th Commencement Ceremony at 11:00 am at the John Hancock Hall in Boston, Massachusetts.
On April 15, 2014, C-SPAN commemorated the bombing anniversary by airing a Fisher College Speaker Series discussion led by national best-selling author Casey Sherman and former Boston Herald lead investigative reporter Dave Wedge, co-authors of the highly anticipated book “Boston Strong.” The authors have been working for several months with a select group of Fisher College students who have assisted them with their exhaustive research.
"Our students have learned important life lessons from those directly impacted by last year's tragic events,” said Dr. Thomas M. McGovern, president of Fisher College. “We've seen countless selfless acts and have been truly inspired by the heroes and survivors who have come together and have helped each other move forward."
Fisher College's upcoming commencement honoring Carlos Arredondo and Jeff Bauman will mark the first time that a college will feature two graduation speakers.
Both men became symbols of courage during the Boston Marathon tragedy through their actions on that fateful day, and the days and months that followed. Arredondo, captured in an iconic photograph, helped save Bauman’s life by wrapping a makeshift tourniquet around his leg and wheeling him to safety.
Despite suffering the loss of both legs, Jeff Bauman is credited with helping authorities identify suspected bombers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Arredondo and Bauman have become close friends since the ordeal and have inspired millions of people around the world.
Jeff Bauman is the author of the New York Times best-selling book “Stronger,” which chronicles his recovery since the Marathon bombings. For more information, please visit www.jeffbaumanstronger.com. Carlos Arredondo is a passionate speaker and advocate for the rights of military servicemen and women. He has also established The Arredondo Brothers Memorial Fund in honor of his sons at Blue Hills Regional Technical School in Canton, Massachusetts. A book is currently being written about Arredondo’s life.
