FISHER COLLEGE TO HOST 7th ANNUAL HONOR YOUR VETERANS PROGRAM

Posted On: 11/6/2013 11:07:00 AM

Boston, MA (November 4, 2013) – Fisher College will host its annual Honor Your Veterans celebration, an event that recognizes the service and dedication of U.S. veterans connected to the Fisher community, on Wednesday, Nov. 6th.

The event will be held in Fisher College’s Alumni Hall at 118 Beacon Street at 12:30 p.m.

Wednesday’s event will begin with a luncheon, featuring Sergeant Daniel M. Clarke, “The Singing Trooper,” who will perform the national anthem. Jennifer Bower, Lieutenant Colonel of the United States Army and Boston University’s ROTC Detachment Commander, will serve as the keynote speaker and will speak about the qualities of veterans: courage, dedication and sacrifice.

Fisher College will also present its first-ever Distinguished Veteran Awards to two U.S. Army veterans who risked their lives to rescue victims of the Boston Marathon bombings: Matthew Patterson, a firefighter from Lynn, MA who heroically rescued seven-year-old Jane Richard from the bombings and Michael Wall, Sergeant of the U.S. Army, who was a first responder at the bomb site.

U.S. Army Lieutenant Elizabeth Connors, recipient of Fisher College’s third-annual Adopt-a-Soldier drive in 2012, will also give remarks. Fisher created its Adopt-a-Soldier program, independent of the traditional Adopt-a-Soldier affiliation, in 2009. All of the soldiers who benefit from the program have a personal connection to the college, i.e. a former student, family friend, etc. The Adopt-a-Soldier program began through a suggestion of Mike Wall, former Admissions Counselor, who is currently serving in the National Guard.

Throughout the day, students, faculty, and staff are invited to take pictures of the historic M3 halftrack army truck parked on Beacon Street. M3 halftracks were widely used during World War II as a communications vehicle.

“The Honor Your Veterans event and Adopt-a-Soldier program are traditions that we’ve continued to grow here at Fisher College,” said Dr. Thomas McGovern, President of Fisher College. “What originally began as a small display in the hallway of Fisher College’s main campus six years ago has evolved into an annual celebration of the bravery, commitment and sacrifice of our veterans.”

President McGovern is a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and launched the college’s Military to Management initiative, offering financial benefits and flexible degree options to veterans and active military personnel seeking higher education.
