GV 311 The American Constitution

Prerequisite: any GV or HI course.

This course will provide a historical overview of the United States Constitution, including its development and evolution through judicial review and interpretation. This course will analyze both federal and state appellate court decisions in light of the Constitution as well as the impact of these decisions on public policy. The course will also analyze the role of political institutions in the development of policy issues that are constitutional in nature. Topics include a historical overview, the Bill of Rights, judicial review, federalism, separation of powers, the electoral process and an examination of civil rights. Students will read, discuss and analyze case law, and will provide written case briefs for evaluation.
